STL Experts Speak on Sediment Project Innovation

PRESS RELEASE

Date December 18, 2007
For Immediate Release

Albert Vicinie, Laboratory Director, and David Thal, Sediments and Tissues Operations Manager, of Severn Trent Laboratories, Inc. (STL) gave two presentations at the 27th Annual North America Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Conference. The presentations, on November 5-9, 2006 in Montreal, Canada, focused on the developmental strategies and methods for sediment analytical projects.

The presentations, selected from more than 1900 abstracts submitted, were included in the technical session Innovative Planning and Quality Oversight for the Characterization of Complex Sediment Investigations.

Mr. Vicinie emphasized the challenges of sediment analytical programs and contrasted them with routine analytical testing. He described the importance of early involvement and communication with laboratories and data users to help determine the appropriate course of action in evaluating sediments. Mr. Thal, a recognized expert in the application of advanced analytical techniques, highlighted regulatory approaches necessary for planning environmental data collection. He also recommended improvements to quality assurance project plans and data quality objectives to ensure successful project execution.

The mission of SETAC is to support the development of principles and practices for protection, enhancement, and management of sustainable environmental quality and ecosystem integrity. The organization is comprised of individuals and institutions engaged in environmental education, research and development, as well as the analysis of environmental policy and decision-making.
