Driving ISM Laboratory Processing Selection with Project Goals

About This Webinar:

Incremental Sampling Methodology (ISM) is being used more frequently to characterize heterogeneous sites. Site owners, government agencies and consultants have significantly increased the use ISM in 2016. ISM laboratory processing is used to produce an appropriately sized subsample that has the analytes of interest at the same concentration as the large incremental sample collected in the field. The end goal is to produce results that represent the conditions at the site and facilitate good decisions. Three different terms are used to describe incremental sampling: Multi-Incremental SamplingTM (MIS), Incremental Sampling Methodology (ISM) and Incremental Composite Sampling (ICS).

Typical processing options cover management of soil moisture, disaggregation, sieving, milling, sample splitting and subsampling. Each of these lab processes has potential impacts on data quality and representativeness that should be considered when selecting the most appropriate options. The Hawaii Department of Health is updating their guidance to include collection of subsamples on field moist samples for certain analyte groups.

There are several laboratory sample processing choices that must be based on the specific project objectives to yield data that is usable for future site decisions. We will look at a few example case studies on how the project objectives will dictate choosing specific laboratory processing options. The types of sites include military training ranges, urban gardens, underground storage tanks, and skeet shooting ranges. Analytes include explosives, metals, PAHs, VOCs and PCBs.
