PRESS RELEASE

Wednesday, Feb 18, 2015

For Immediate Release

Dr. Charlie W. Carter, environmental testing Industry giant and TestAmerica Chief Technical Officer, died after a brief illness on Thursday, February 12th, 2015.

TestAmerica Chairman and CEO, Rachel Brydon Jannetta, issued the following statement: “We are deeply saddened to announce that Charlie Carter has passed away. Charlie’s brilliance, relentless work ethic, and passion were the source of amazing energy and innovations that enriched not only our firm and our clients, but the testing Industry at large. The Industry is immeasurably better because of Charlie. The thoughts of the management and employees of TestAmerica go out to Charlie’s wife of 43 years Carolyn Edwards, Charlie’s family and friends.”

“Charlie spent the last fifteen years working with TestAmerica and its predecessor company Severn Trent Laboratories, where as a Vice President he was responsible for all technical matters, providing critical scientific expertise and support to all areas of the business. Charlie was deeply respected by all who knew him, both in the company and across the environmental Industry. He will be remembered for his radiance, his sense of humor, his humanity, his supreme competence and problem-solving ability.”

Dr. Carter dedicated over 30 years to the environmental laboratory business. Dr. Carter’s experience included both technical and management positions with full responsibility for business development, all aspects of operations, and financial performance. Dr. Carter was heavily involved in Industry organizations and professional societies and was a frequent speaker on technical and policy topics. Challenges that Dr. Carter helped the Industry solve included private sector analysis of radioactive waste, Department of Defense quality assurance protocols, electronic data delivery protocols, environmental laboratory data integrity, homeland security, and national laboratory accreditation. Dr. Carter served on the Board of the Environmental Sciences Section of the American Council of Independent Laboratories (ACIL), and he was the past chair for both the Environmental Sciences Section, and ACIL Data Integrity Committee. Dr. Carter’s senior managers Ray Frederici, Executive Director of Quality & EHS, and Eric Redman, Director of Technical Services, will take over the reins leading technical support for TestAmerica; they have over 55 years of industry experience between them.

Dr. Carter was born on September 27, 1951, in Highland Park, Illinois, and grew up in Lake Bluff, Illinois, a town north of Chicago near the Wisconsin border. Dr. Carter received a Bachelor’s degree from Earlham College in 1973 and a Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry from Drexel University in 1981, and thereafter spent his career in the field of environmental testing and analysis.

Dr. Carter was the winner of the 2010 Outstanding Publication Award from the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors for his article with Irwin H. Suffet, “Binding DDT to Dissolved Humic Materials,” Environmental Science and Technology 16:735-740.

Dr. Carter was a resident of Las Vegas for 23 years. He enjoyed golf, bird watching, hiking and “could still beat his sons at racquetball” at age 63.
