TestAmerica Experts to Present at the 2016 National Environmental Monitoring Conference (NEMC)

PRESS RELEASE

Wednesday, Jul 13, 2016

For Immediate Release

TestAmerica, the leader in environmental testing, will be presenting on four topics at the 2016 NEMC Symposium on Aug 8-12, 2016 in Orange County, CA.  Dr. Richard Burrows will deliver the keynote address at the Symposium, entitled Generating Data of Known and Documented Quality – What Does That Really Mean?  The presentation will examine why changes to The NELAC Institute (TNI) standard were both necessary and compelling.  It will address the benefits the changes are expected to bring, and what remains to be done in future standards to actually achieve the goal of “known and documented data quality”.

Dr. Burrows will also deliver a presentation entitled “Really, a Revised MDL Procedure…”.  Dr. Burrows will address the new 40 CFR Part 136 Method Detection Limit (MDL) procedure that was recently updated. This presentation will illustrate how laboratories can simultaneously comply with EPA, TNI, DOD and various state detection and quantitation limit requirements, thereby improving data quality and reliability.

Dr. Burrows is a Corporate Technical Director for TestAmerica and has more than 30 years of experience in analytical chemistry, of which 25 years have been in the environmental laboratory field. He is currently Chair of the TNI Chemistry Expert Committee and is twice recipient of the ACIL Preston Millar Award.  He received his B.S. in Chemistry and Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Bristol, in England.

Dr. Mark Bruce will deliver a presentation entitled “Analysis of Dissolved Hydrocarbon Gases in Water – Pitfalls and Improvements”.  Analysis of methane and other light hydrocarbons is frequently done as part of pre-drill background studies in support of hydraulic fracturing activities. Gaseous hydrocarbon analysis in water is also used to monitor degradation of environmental contaminants. There is no fully validated USEPA method for this analysis nor are there commercially available proficiency test samples.  Dr. Bruce will discuss opportunities to improve accuracy and reproducibility and provide data more suitable for the oil & gas industry.

Dr. Bruce is also a Corporate Technical Director for TestAmerica and has more than 30 years of experience in the environmental laboratory industry.  He has participated in the development of several USEPA methods and has been active on the Marcellus Shale Coalition Dissolved Gas Analysis inter-lab study team. He is also a member of the ASTM D-19 workgroup that is developing a dissolved gas analysis method. Dr. Bruce earned his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Cincinnati in 1984.

Eric Redman, Corporate Director of Technical Services, will present on “Contaminants of Emerging Concern in White Nose Syndrome (WNS) Bats”.  WNS is a disease affecting hibernating bats which, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, has killed more than 5.5 million bats in the Northeastern United States since it was first identified in 2007. WNS is named for the white fungus that appears on the muzzle and other body parts of hibernating bats. A study was conducted to measure antibacterial and other contaminants of concern in bats affected by WNS.  Contaminants were measured using HPLC coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) and included novel sample preparation techniques to overcome unique challenges associated with bat tissue matrices. Results from the LC/MS/MS analysis will be presented.

Mr. Redman is Corporate Director of Technical Services for TestAmerica and has more than 30 years of experience in the environmental testing industry, specializing in the application of analytical chemistry to environmental problems. Mr. Redman provides support for clients, regulators, and other data users regarding trace level analyses, including PFAS, Dioxins/Furans, PCB Congeners, Pesticides, Endocrine Disrupting Compounds, and Emerging Contaminants. Mr. Redman received a BS in Chemistry and Physics from California State University and a MS degree in Chemical Physics from the University of California-Riverside.
