Metals in the Environment

Metals are naturally occurring  constituents in the environment and their concentrations vary based on geographic region.  All environmental media have naturally occurring concentrations of metals. Some metals are essential for maintaining proper health for  animals, plants and microorganisms.  Industrial metals such as copper, nickel, titanium, chromium, molybdenum, selenium and others are used in various manufacturing processes. Other metals like mercury, arsenic and lead play an integral part in consumer and industrial products (batteries, ammunition, insecticides, etc.).  Metals cannot be created or destroyed by either chemical or biological processes and, as the concentration of metals increases in the environment, so does the potential risk. 

One of the most commonly analyzed suite of metals at TestAmerica is the RCRA 8 suite shown below.  Each regulation, whether it be the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Water Act, CERCLA, or RCRA, all focus on a different suite of metals and TestAmerica routinely supports them all as well as other unregulated metals.

TestAmerica uses Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP/MS) as well as ICP/MS operated with Collision Cell technology and cold-vapor atomic absorption methodologies for metals analysis, utilizing EPA methods 6010, 6020, 200.7, 200.8, 7470, 7471 and 245.1.  Multiple approaches to metals testing allows TestAmerica to meet your regulatory requirements and design a testing program that meets your budgetary needs.  TestAmerica maintains metals certification in all states that offer accreditation, and provides testing services for ground water, surface water, waste water, drinking water, soil, air, waste, sediments and tissues.  Testing of liquid samples is offered on either a total or dissolved basis, and if filtration is required, it can be done in the field or the lab to meet your sampling needs.
