Vapor Intrusion

Vapor Intrusion Overview

Vapor Intrusion (VI) is the subsurface migration of Volatile Organic Compounds into overlying or adjacent buildings, and is a potential health concern at sites where volatile chemicals are present in the soil and/or groundwater.  The field of vapor intrusion is growing, and the evaluation of this pathway is a complex, ever-changing science, with continuously evolving regulations and accepted practices.

US EPA published a Technical Guide for Assessing and Mitigating the Vapor Intrusion Pathway from Subsurface Vapor Sources to Indoor Air in June 2015.  This technical document was created to guide site evaluations at Brownfield, RCRA and Superfund sites.  In addition to EPA guidance, 47 states have now adopted some form of guidance or numerical standards for evaluating vapor intrusion pathways.
