Pharmaceuticals and Personal
Care Products

TestAmerica offers an extensive suite of analytical capabilities for the determination of Pharmaceutical/Personal Care Products (PPCPs), Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs), and related indicator compounds in environmental matrices.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are a class of emerging contaminants that include many commonly used medicinal, cosmetic, and personal hygiene products. These compounds have been detected at trace levels in the environment, and studies continue to unfold the environmental impact of this contamination. In response to this area of concern, regulatory controls have been established for pharmaceutical manufacturers and the healthcare industry. New regulations are under development for other direct and indirect sources that include:

• Personal Hygiene Product Manufacturers • Commercial Agriculture Operations
• Municipal Publicly-Owned Treatment Works (POTWs) • Biosolids/sludge Management
• Landfills

Municipal Publicly-Owned Treatment Works (POTWs)

TestAmerica is currently supporting determination of PPCPs and related compounds for a variety of public water systems and treatment works across the US. These POTW programs include efforts to minimize contaminant levels in discharge to sensitive ecosystems, and pilot plant studies to compare and optimize treatment options. TestAmerica offers PPCP analytical testing capabilities by EPA Method 1694, as well as other methodologies developed in-house, through collaboration with academia and incorporating experience in analyzing similar compounds. One major development includes the use of LC/MS/MS technology for the determination of a variety of steroids and hormone compounds referenced in method EPA Method 1698.

TestAmerica supports a variety of analyte and reporting limits options, and routinely performs method development for additional analytes, according to published methods. TestAmerica provides our clients with:

• Extensive experience with referenced analytical techniques,

including LC/MS and HRMS with isotope dilution

• Evolving analyte lists that are evaluated and expanded based

upon project needs and new market developments

• Access to technical and regulatory resources within our laboratory

network

TestAmerica's PPCP analytical capabilities complement the broader range of services for water supply and treatment operations, which include UCMR, UCMR II, and radionuclide testing. TestAmerica follows EPA published guidance within the listed analyte methods and reporting parameters.

TestAmerica maintains authorization from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to perform the determination of certain pharmaceutical compounds classified as controlled substances, and will investigate certification for other compounds on a project specific basis.

TestAmerica's suite of capabilities incorporates a comprehensive range of common analyte classes, in addition to non-routine or newly identified constituents of interest. Common and non-routine analyte groups associated with PPCP and EDC assessments include:

• Steroids/hormones • Phthalates
• Pharmaceuticals • PAHs and other semivolatile
compounds
• Surfactants/alkylphenols • Polychlorinated dioxins/furans
• Antibacterial agents • Polychlorinated biphenyl congeners
• Organochlorine pesticides • Perchlorate
• Organophosphate pesticides • Brominated flame retardants
• Phenoxy herbicides • Perfluorinated compounds
• Pyrethroid pesticides
