Insensitive Munitions Constituents, the Emerging Energetics Analytes

In January 2007 a rule was added to the U.S. Code Title 10, Section 2389, stipulating "The Secretary of Defense shall ensure, to the extent practicable that insensitive munitions under development or procurement are safe throughout development and fielding when subject to unplanned stimuli."  This put into DoD regulations the on-going advanced technology effort to replace conventional munition contituents with more stable and perhaps less toxic compounds.

In 2010 the U.S. Army qualified a formulation known as IMX-101 (a DNAN/NTO mixture) as a replacement for TNT.  A formulation identified as IMX-104 (IMX-101 and RDX) was selected as the leading replacement for the older Composition B (a TNT/RDX mixture).  Environmental and toxicological studies of these IM constituents are in the early stages.

These compounds are new to the environmental chemistry arena and may require either modifications to or new methods for their analysis.  Since the formulations are being manufactured in crystalline form, similar to TNT and Composition B, it is predictable that low order detonations in the field will result in the same sampling and analysis concerns that drive the use of incremental sampling methodology for the more conventional munitions constituents by EPA Method 8330B.
