Explosives and Energetics

Explosives, Energetics and Chemical Agent Degradates

In 1989, the EPA published Method 8330 utilizing HPLC/UV for the analysis of explosives. RDX and TNT were the main constituents of concern. In the mid-1990s, communities that were using groundwater sources as drinking water identified these constituents as impacting their water supplies. Action levels were lowered in the late 1990s.

More Than Two Decades of Experience at Eurofins TestAmerica

In 2001, Eurofins TestAmerica offered LC/MS as a definitive method for explosives analysis in groundwater. This method accommodated the addition of explosive degradate compounds as well as additional explosives with a greater level of selectivity and sensitivity than that currently being offered by alternative methods. Eurofins TestAmerica continues to offers Method 8330 by HPLC and an LC/MS option for explosives analysis utilizing SW 846 Method 8321.

Eurofins TestAmerica also continues to support the destruction of chemical munitions and warfare agents by providing lab services for the permitting and use of stationary source emissions from incinerators and neutralization processes. Support has been provided to every major site including the Johnston Atoll, Pine Bluff Arsenal, Anniston Army Depot, Umatilla Chemical Depot, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Deseret Chemical Depot and Pueblo Chemical Depot.

Chemical Agent Degradate Compounds

In the mid-1990s, Eurofins TestAmerica developed two analytical methods to support the analysis of Chemical Agent Degradates in support of the U.S. Army's Non-stockpile Program. Eurofins TestAmerica reviewed the existing U.S. Army Toxic and Hazardous Materials Agency’s three analytical methods, developed in the early 1980s. Eurofins TestAmerica developed two methods using LC/MS/MS and GC/MS technologies to support the requested degradate compounds. This change in technology improved the sensitivity and specificity of the analysis for these compounds of interest. Eurofins TestAmerica worked with third-party laboratories to provide the screening of the samples for chemical agents prior to the arrival of the samples at our facilities.
