Asbestos in Air

Eurofins TestAmerica's EMLab P&K division uses NIOSH 7400 for the testing of air samples for asbestos and other fibers by PCM. It is used primarily for estimating asbestos concentrations in air and to show compliance with limits set by NIOSH, OSHA and other regulatory agencies. The method does not differentiate between asbestos and other fibers and can also be used to estimate the airborne concentration of other non-asbestos materials such as fibrous glass. Fibers less than 0.25 microns in diameter will not be detected with this method.

Asbestos in Bulk

Eurofins TestAmerica's EMLab P&K division supports the testing of bulk building materials for asbestos by performing a visual estimation or by performing various point counts using EPA Method 600/R-93/116. This method is the most widely used method for estimating asbestos is bulk building materials and works well for most sample types. A more detailed method called point counting is used for a more accurate estimation of asbestos in samples with low asbestos concentration. The method separates the sample material into various layers based on their morphology, and then detects for the presence of the different asbestos fibers in each layer.

Asbestos in Solid Materials

Eurofins TestAmerica's EMLab P&K division tests for asbestos in rocks (and soils) using the California Air Resource Board 435 method. The CARB 435 method is a specialized method used for testing asbestos content in the serpentine aggregate storage piles, on conveyer belts, and on covered surfaces such as roads, play-yards, shoulders and parking lots. The method includes crushing the sample using a mill to produce a sample size of less than 200 tyler mesh (75 microns), and then reporting the asbestos content by performing a 400 point count technique.


Legionella testing and analysis is performed by EMLab P&K on waters (cooling tower, public supply, etc.) by culturing, using a variety of methods depending on the sample collection source. Legionella samples are plated onto differential and selective agars for quantitative analysis. Legionella testing by non-viable methods can lead to cross reactions of the antibodies with other organisms and false positives. Legionella are then confirmed by various identifying characteristics recommended by the CDC. This method has a detection limit of 0.1 cfu/ml.


Various types of mold analyses for air and surfaces are supported by EMLab P&K, including culturable fungi, spore trap analysis, USP 797 for the evaluation of fungi based upon U.S. Pharmacopeia General Chapter 797, and yeast identification.


EMLab P&K employs the E-Perm system for air samples, which collects, processes and reads ion concentrations. A radon measurement always involves taking two voltage readings: the initial reading and the final reading after exposure. The difference in voltage and the exposure time information is converted into a radon concentration. Some states regulate or qualify providers of radon measurement and mitigation services by requiring registration, certification, or licensing; your state can provide you with more information.

USP 797

USP 797 refers to chapter 797 "Pharmaceutical Compounding – Sterile Preparations," in the USP National Formulary. It is the first set of enforceable sterile compounding standards issued by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). USP 797 describes the guidelines, procedures and compliance requirements for compounding sterile preparations. It also sets the standards that apply to all settings in which sterile preparations are compounded.
