Part 3 - PFAS: Data Defensibility and Usability

Tuesday, March 3, 2019 - 1:30 P.M. ET

About This Webinar:

The chemistry and analysis of PFAS is unique and challenging. There is currently no consensus method for all environmental matrices or all target analytes. For all matrices other than finished drinking water, a 537 Modified method, using isotope dilution, is commonly used is commonly used but inconsistently applied.

Several other methods have been published for PFAS in non-potable and solid matrices including ISO Method 25101, ASTM D7979, D7968, and the EPA is in the process of validating and publishing a number of methods with various analytical techniques and parameters for different matrices. The Department of Defense (DoD) has compiled rigorous quality assurance criteria for PFAS testing under Table B-15 of the Quality Systems Manual (QSM).

This soup of methods and analytical approaches has left stakeholders with the challenging job of navigating their options to make the right choice for their project objectives. Once the data have been reported the task of data review and validation begins and that process can feel somewhat daunting when it comes to this unique class of chemicals.

Taryn McKnight aims to provide clarity through a comparison of methods and a discussion about analytical parameters and their potential impact on data quality. Then she will take us on a deeper dive into data usability and data validation considerations.

Topics the Presentation Will Cover Include:

- Methods Comparison – what is available today and what is under development
- The use of isotope dilution – what does this mean?
- Quality control measures and the impact on data quality
- Data Quality Objectives – EPA Seven Step Process
- Data Review – 537.1 and DoD QSM 5.3 Table B-15
- Field Sampling Considerations in Data Review

A question and answer session will immediately follow the presentation.
